Making the most of your garden all year round

Even though the colder weather is settling in, this does not mean we have to say goodbye to our gardens until next year. We think it is important to make the most of your garden all year round. So don’t pack away your outdoor furniture just yet, here are our top tips for outdoor entertaining throughout the winter.

1. Invest in a patio heater
Patio heaters became a popular item when the pandemic meant we were only allowed to meet outside in December 2020. But in fact, they are a handy thing to have every year. A cosy evening gathered round the patio heater all snug in coats and hats (even a hot water bottle if necessary) with some ambient fairy lights can create a lovely evening with friends. Heat up the mulled wine and enjoy a night under the stars.

2. Choose the right garden furniture
Outdoor furniture is the focal point of most gardens; therefore, it is important to choose the right set. Metal garden furniture is without a doubt the most popular choice, but with many different metals to choose from it can be hard to know which one to pick. Aluminium is perfect for outdoor furniture, if treated properly it does not rot or rust, it is completely weatherproof so can be left outside all year round and simply put, it looks fantastic. An obvious choice for outdoor entertaining in the winter months.

3. Blankets and Scatter Cushions
Ensuring that you have enough blankets for all your guests to snuggle under is very important. They will make the space feel instantly cosy and add extra warmth on a cold evening. Adding in scatter cushions that not only look stylish but provide that extra comfort will keep guests comfy late into the evening.

4. Umbrella or Pergola
We all know that the British weather is not very reliable, therefore having some sort of covering if the weather is not on your side is very useful. If the rain starts to come down, in true English style, you cannot let it ruin your evening. So having a large umbrella or pergola placed over your outdoor furniture allows you to continue socialising in the dry.

5. Lighting
With the evenings now getting dark before 5pm, lighting is especially important. Lighting is not only functional, allowing you to stay in the garden long after the sun has set, but it can also create a great ambience. By simple adding a string of fairy lights you can create a cosy yet functional feel to your outdoor entertaining.

6. Music
A winter’s evening is not complete without a soundtrack. Get out your speaker and play some of your favourite songs for you and friends. The best thing about entertaining from home is that you can pick the soundtrack to the night, with friends being able to request their favourites. And the closer it gets to Christmas…the more acceptable it is for those festive favourites.

These six simple tips can help to create a great winters evening for you and your friends. A comfy and cosy evening to be enjoyed by all, topped off with a nice hot chocolate or a glass of mulled wine, it is sure to be a hit.
